Unblocktober is the world’s first month-long campaign and awareness month to improve the health of our drains, sewers, watercourses and seas – driven completely by the public.
Plastfree is partnering with the drainage company Lanes For Drains who have been in the news last year and also on BBC for starting a campaign called ‘ Unblocktober’. It gained great momentum focussing on issues like flushing fats, oils, wet wipes, sanitary pads, liners etc down the toilet & sink that eventually costs the common people and govt millions to get rid of as it blocks the drains. https://www.unblocktober.org/
Plastfree, will be supporting their campaign as a feminine care brand focussed on environmental issues and it would be fantastic to get teachers & students spread this message ‘DO NOT FLUSH’ a solution to the single use plastic problem in oceans and seas today!
Because of our irresponsible actions over the course of many decades, we have consistently flushed and poured dangerous liquids and items into our drains. This leads to the creation of fatbergs – enormous masses of congealed fat, oil, grease, wet wipes, period care products, cotton buds, condoms, nappies, bandages and much more – which block drains and sewers and cause them to work less effectively than they should. When sewers and drains get blocked, it can cause any or all of the following:
- Foul waste flooding
- Excavation and repair, causing roadworks
However, it can also lead to plastic pollution, which is another global crisis that we need to fight. Nappies, period care products, cotton buds and many other items are non-biodegradable because they contain hidden plastics. Putting them in our drains increases the chances of plastic making its way into our rivers and seas – into which approximately 8 million pieces of plastic find their way every day.
The good news is you can make a big difference, but without having to make a big effort. All we want is for you to pay more attention to what you put down the drain this October and commit to putting none of the following down your drains or toilets for the whole month:
- Cooking oil
- Food – even crumbs!
- Anything containing plastic, including:
- Wet wipes
- Tampons, applicators and wrappers
- Sanitary/menstrual pads and towels
- Cotton buds
- Contact lenses
- Bandages and plasters
- Razor blades
- Dental floss
